How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one among the most versatile herbs you could use in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. Here are some ways to grow basil indoors.

  1. You should choose carefully where to place your basil. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination takes approximately ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seeds are big enough, it's time to transplant them. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers in a sunny window or in indirect light. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. After the dangers of frost have passed, mulch the plants. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
