FAQ

How do I know what type of soil I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. More organic matter is found in darker soils than in lighter soils. Soil tests are another option. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

What is the minimum space required to grow vegetables?

One square foot of soil will require 1/2 pound of seeds. This is a good rule of thumb. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

Which month is the best to start a vegetable gardening?

It is best to plant vegetables between April and June. This is when soil is at its warmest and plants are growing the fastest. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to wait until July or August.

How often should my indoor plants be watered?

Indoor plants need watering once every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. Humidity is essential for healthy plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see signs of new growth, you'll need more fertilizer each two weeks.
