FAQ

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

When to plant herbs

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. Once plants start growing, move them into bright indirect light. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can survive up to ten years. To ensure new growth, it's important that you repot indoor plants every few years. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

How often should I water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants need to be watered every two days. Humidity levels can be maintained inside the house by watering. Humidity is crucial for healthy plants.

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

You're not wrong. All you need to do is use a shovel, trowels, watering containers, and maybe even a rake.

What vegetables can you grow together?

Growing tomatoes and peppers together is excellent because they both like similar temperatures and soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. Once the weather gets warmer, transplant your pepper and tomato plants outdoors.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
