How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix well. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
