Bee Friendly Gardening - How to Attract Bees to Your Garden

vegetable gardening ideas

One of the best ways you can attract bees is to create a natural habitat. A water source is essential for butterflies and bees to drink. A pond or shallow water pool can be built next to a flowering shrub. Make sure you regularly fill the water container. Make sure your garden has shady areas where they can rest. You can also build hollow logs or stakes to provide a hive for non-honey bees.

It is important for bees to know that they love a variety. Flowers that bloom throughout the year are most attractive to bees. For bees, flower plants that bloom at different seasons are more beneficial. Different flowers are more appealing to honey bees than those with the same shape and color. Honeybees do not like flowers that are red or orange. They prefer whites and yellows. Bees also don't like red.

You can also attract bees by planting flowers around your vegetable gardens. It is a good idea to plant several types of flowers. You can plant vegetables that are different in bloom times so that the bees are interested. Zucchini (pumpkin), peppers, and other vegetables are all great options. Wild garlic and peppers are also proven to attract bees. If you don't know how to attract bees to your garden, you can use special bee-attractors.

If you want to attract bees, make sure the environment is as comfortable as possible. Planting flowers in sunny areas is a good idea as they love this type of climate. If they're solitary, you should plant perennial plants to attract more of them. If you are lucky enough to attract bees to your garden, they will stay there for a long time.

Wildflowers and herbs can be grown next to flowers. Consider creating a bee habitat while you're at the same time to help keep them around longer. A bee-friendly garden can not only enhance the beauty of your garden but also help other animals. The more plants and flowers you grow, the more likely it is that you'll have a healthy colony. A healthy colony can help maintain the ecosystem's health and other species will remain alive.

gardening tips for spring

Flat and shallow flowers will attract more bees than plants with taller, wider flowers. Hidden nectar spurs are also a favorite of bees, which prefer flowers from the mint family. Bees prefer purple, yellow, and blue flowers. Purple is the most vivid color for bees. You can also make beehouses for your garden using bamboo bundles. These are great for keeping your garden tidy and providing a natural habitat to bees.

When choosing flowers to plant in your garden, be sure to choose species with flowers that are attractive to bees. Single flowers have a single corona and a single set of petals. Double flowers can have multiple layers. The pollen in single flowers is more abundant than that of double flowers. They are therefore more attractive to bees. You can also grow different types of flowers, such as heirloom varieties of perennials and herbs. Bees are good at seeing colors so make sure to choose flowers that have blue, violet and white petals.

How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
