Care for herb gardens - How do you take care of herbs plants?

indoor herb gardening for beginners

You can easily care for your herbs if these basic rules are followed. Some herbs are more drought-tolerant than others and require watering more often. Mint and rosemary, for example do well in drought-resistant conditions. However, you should also keep in mind that most culinary herbs prefer a medium-damp soil. However, you should remember that this is not a substitute for proper rainfall. You can still grow herbs indoors even if you don't have a garden.

For indoor and outdoor herb planting, choose a location that gets full sunlight. If you live in an area with very hot summers, limit the amount of sunlight that day. Most herbs can live without fertilizer if they are exposed to sunlight during the afternoon. Consider planting your herbs in a plant pot or a container made of plastic to limit their spread. If you can move the container, it will be easier to control invasive plants.

Perennial herbs need regular pruning. To encourage new growth, it is important to trim every three- or four inches of the woody stems in spring. Cut back the old branches to 4 inches from the ground to encourage fuller, more attractive growth. Potted herbs may be brought inside in colder months. Eight weeks before the first frost is a good time to prune them. Then, you can use them for cooking or in your favorite recipes.

You can harvest herbs outdoors during the midday, when they aren't as hot as the sun. When you are picking herbs from the ground cut the stems about a third. This will prevent stems splitting. For some herbs, like chives and lavander, you will need a full stem. After the herbs have been picked, you should place them in a paper bag with holes. This will increase the drying time.

Angelica needs regular watering. Angelica needs watering twice a week in warmer areas. Avoid getting the stems or leaves wet by aiming the watering can's nozzle at the root. Root rot can be caused by overwatering. Follow the watering instructions carefully. Soil pH should range from 6.0 to 7.2. Once your plant is at a pH that is suitable for growing, you can harvest it frequently.

Most herbs are good companions. You can grow them together so long as they have the same needs. Some, like mint do not thrive in containers. These plants should be grown in their individual pots. Mint can spread quickly so it should be planted in its own pot. If you have too many of a particular herb, you may be able to share them with your neighbors. You can even sell some of the herbs to neighbors. It could be a very profitable venture.

Growing herbs indoors is possible with the right care. The best conditions for herbs are a sunny area and well-drained soil. However, they don't like low temperatures. If you have a sunny window, a window that receives indirect sunlight is a great option. A windowsill is a great place to grow mint and chives as well as parsley and thyme. These plants will be even more attractive if they are well-lit.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
