How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one among the most versatile herbs you could use in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. The pots should be covered with clear plastic wrap. Germination usually takes about 10 days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seeds are big enough, it's time to transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Water the plants regularly. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. To determine how much water your plants require, use a rain gauge. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
